An International Seminar on sustainable utilisation of tropical plant bio mass was organised under the patronage of Dr. ES Yesodharan, Executive Vice President of Kerala State Council of Science Technology and Environment, Dr. Jayakrishnan , Vice Chancellor of University of Kerala Dr. KR Viswanbharan , Vice Chancellor Kerala Agricultural University on 15th and 16th of Dec 2008 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala State INDIA.
The Programme was jointly organized by The Kerala State Council of Science Technology and Environment, Pattom, INDIA, Centre for Marine Bio diversity, The Centre for Bioinformtics, and the Department of Environmental Sciences of Kerala University, INDIA, Kerala Agricultural University, INDIA, SASNET Fermented Foods and Departmentt of Applied Nutrition, Lund University SWEDEN. Delegates representing different parts of India, Sri Lanka, Sweden and other countries participated in the programme,
The intention was to have a two days seminar and workshop. On the first day there was a common session in the morning dealing with state of the art lectures in selected subjects by invited speakers from Sweden and India. The invited lectures were on sustainable utilisation of plant bio mass for: Food production, Production of animal feed, Bio-fuel (biogas), Bioactive compounds (drugs and food additives etc ) Manure, Vermiculture and organic farming Other uses (building materials, packaging, decoration etc ) In the after noon a session of oral presentations of the submitted papers was conducted on papers submitted along with a poster session to provide room for participation from younger scientists.
On the second day there was a workshop. The participants were divided into groups and they were asked to discuss various areas of the main theme and the results were presented in the after noon at the concluding session.
As a last step of the meeting and as a first step for the future a resolution to form a network for sustainable development of Kerala was passed. The organising committee and the Scientific committee of the seminar was asked to be the advisory committee and coordinating committee to formulate the rules and regulations of the network to get it registered as a non governmental organisation under the provisions of the Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and charitable societies registration act of 1955.
